Luke's birth narrative concludes with a description of a "prophetess" Anna, who waited and witnessed to God's redemptive hope in the Messiah. Meeting these people in Luke's Gospel challenge the idea of a 400 year period of prophetic silence. The witnesses and prophets were there, faithfully praying, hoping waiting and speaking.
There was a prophetess at the temple,
Anna daughter of Phaneul,
Advanced in years, with dignity,
A widow from earliest memory,
Her husband gone these long years,
She served the Lord, perhaps through tears,
Her life devoted to serving God,
Seeing Jesus, the baby Messiah she knew she could,
Give thanks and share her faith with them,
Who awaited salvation in Jerusalem.
