Advent for Amateurs - Poems of Hope, Part 1

I'm writing to you, oh lover of God,
A historical narrative that might seem odd,
Because it has spiritual realities, strange but true,
And so on the word of an eye witness or two.
I'm giving you these facts to ponder,
So your faith may grow in awe and wonder.

In the days of Herod, the Judean King,
Was a priest named Zacharias, who honored God in everything.
And Elizabeth his wife, Aaron's daughter,
And here's where the story gets a little bit odder.

As Zacharias was serving as priest in the temple,
The people were praying, their devotion so simple.
An angel popped in to announce: God has heard your prayer,
And in the place of barrenness a child has grown there.

And Zacharias quaked (though God gave him a son),
The angel said, "Don't be afraid, for this child is the one,
Who as a prophet and in the Nazarite fashion,
Will return many people to God with a passion."

And because Zacharias gave expression to doubt,
Gabriel made him mute until John came out.
And when Zacharias returned he motioned and gestured,
But could not speak a word, his speech was sequestered.
But he inwardly beamed as Elizabeth his wife,
Conceived a great child who would alter their lives.

Luke 1:1-25.
