Advent for Amateurs - Zacharias' Song

Zacharias, his season of imposed natal silence passed, filed with the Holy Spirit, expressed his heart this way:

Zacharias, speech restored,
Spirit-filled, blessed the Lord.
"God has come to His people,
His mission is obvious,
He's come to help us,
He's come to restore us.

From David's house,
As prophets predicted,
To save us from those,
By whom we're afflicted.

And the hints, and the foretastes,
Of help in our history,
Have now culminated,
In God's present mercy.

To our ancient fathers,
These promises made,
But now, at this hour,
God sends us His aid.

He's relieved our oppression,
So with burgeoning confidence,
Our lives are directed,
To serve Him with reverence.

The way of our lives,
Being formed by His purpose,
We get a clean slate,
Though we didn't deserve it.

And you, John my son,
Are a prophet to Majesty,
Plowing the ground,
So the knowledge of God can be,
Sown in the hearts,
Of women and men,
In their experience,
Of forgiveness of sin.

And in place of our darkness,
And recurring despair,
The light of Messiah,
Is gathering there.

And John, strong and solitary,
Austere in the wilderness,
Awaited the time,
God would fulfill all this.
